Captain Kirk Goes Bitcoin Mining

Bitcoin – the final frontier. Apparently, not even aging TV stars are immune to the lure of digital currencies as seen via the example of William Shatner, whose stardom rose to prominence decades ago in the hit TV sci-fi series, Star Trek, in which he played the admirable and unshakable James T. Kirk, captain of the starship Enterprise.

Shatner, 87, who's known to transcend the boundaries (his kiss with Uhura in the 1968 episode of the series is incorrectly cited as the first interracial kiss portrayed on US television) is apparently spending his senior days – mining Bitcoin! That's what he admitted to Solar Alliance startup after proclaiming him their celebrity spokesperson. Shatner then went on to say that this is not even his first foray into the cryptocurrency world, although he admits he is not 100% sure what he's doing most of the time.

In an interview with Chicago Tribune, Shatner said: “The concept is so, I guess the word is bizarre. You have to blank your mind and say, ‘What is blockchain, again? How does mining operate, again?’ The concepts are really strange, and yet when you begin to grasp it, it makes sense.” For him, it all began in 2014 when he was sent some Bitcoin tokens by a fan, only for the actor to Tweet soon after: “What the heck is a bit coin?”

Solar Alliance is battling a barrage of criticism coming from the environmentalist groups who are adamant that Bitcoin mining wastes resources. This is why Solar Alliance is ready to take on a feat of spreading out on 14 acres of land in the Midwest, install solar panels there and harvest the sun's energy to generate the power Bitcoin miners need to do their stuff.

Murphysboro, the Illinois town of 10,000 inhabitants, has already offered 165,000 of square feet in a vacant factory to the company to be converted for mining operations. Its Mayor Stephens said that the town is “like a lot of Middle America, have seen job losses because of a change in the worldwide economy. From my perspective, we’re going to have someone who will occupy a previously derelict property, and whatever development comes out of it will just make it more marketable if the project is not successful.” Miners can rent the space there and get some free coaching and advice from the company members.

Shatner was approached by Solar Alliance when they outfitted his own home by coincidence, saying he'd help them run the facility when it's operational. “I’m in Chicago a lot, and I live in Kentucky part of the time. I might very well do that. It’s an interesting idea to see it at work because … it’s so esoteric that it’s difficult to understand.”

Gal Yifrach Wins First Gold Bracelet in 2018 WSOP $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed

Casino News Daily
Gal Yifrach Wins First Gold Bracelet in 2018 WSOP $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed

Gal Yifrach, a Los Angeles-based entrepreneur and recreational poker player, claimed last night his first WSOP gold bracelet for taking down Event #28: $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Handed of this year’s edition of the popular series. Aside from the gold piece, Yifrach also collected his largest-ever poker payout of $461,798 for topping the tournament’s 868-strong field.

His triumph in the WSOP came a little over a year after the player captured a gold piece from the WSOP Circuit. Back at The Bicycle, Yifrach entered a WSOP Circuit $3,250 High Roller to win it and collect his first gold ring from the series.

Speaking to WSOP staff last night, Yifrach said that he usually does not play much of a tournament poker and that tables where higher-stakes cash games are played are where he could be seen more often. He also pointed out that he does not play professionally. With a gold ring and now a gold bracelet, he has clearly been doing very well for a non-professional.

The player said he was quite comfortable with the $3,000 No-Limit Hold’em 6-Max’s structure as it allowed for a lot of hands to be played, something that is typical for cash games.

The tournament was scheduled as a three-day one, but it took eventually a fourth additional day for it to be sealed. On Day 3, Yifrach took the lead during four-handed play and was really hoping that he would be able to end the tournament on that day and as the winner.

He pointed out that he felt he played very well and had really nice hands coming his way, which further helped him lock the title. However, despite his own efforts to finish the job on Day 3, action had to be extended with three players left in contention.

Final Day of Action

Yifrach came into Day 4 as the chip leader and with massive advantage over his two remaining opponents – James Mackey and Gary Hasson. The three players battled it out for nearly 50 hands before a player got busted.

Hasson was that unfortunate one after clashing against the eventual winner. Action sped up quite a bit after Hasson’s elimination. The two-handed duel between Yifrach and Mackey kicked off with the former holding nearly two times more chips than his final opponent.

However, over the course of just seven hands, Mackey managed to even the stacks and put Yifrach into big danger. On the final hand of the tournament, the two players went all in, Mackey tabling pocket tens to Yifrach’s [As][8h]. A [8d][6h][2c][2s][8c] board secured Yifrach with a full house and the tournament title. A second gold bracelet thus eluded Mackey. The player took home a consolation prize of $285,377 for running deep into the event.

As mentioned above, the $3,000 buy-in six-max tournament drew a field of 868 entries who generated a prize pool of $2,343,600. The money was split into payouts for the top 131 finishers.

Iron Dog Releases Si Xiang Slot

Iron Dog Releases Si Xiang Slot
Iron Dog Releases Si Xiang Slot

In the last 6 months or more, there has been a flood of games whose subject matter revolves around the ancient Chinese culture, with one of the more recent releases being Play’n Go’s Fu Er Dai slot. We happen to love the trend, as we feel that Chinese culture is so vast and beautiful that it certainly deserves all kinds of exposure. Also, its market is enormous, so there's some healthy commercial reasoning behind it, as well.

This time around, however, it's Iron Dog Studio, a 1x2 Gaming subsidiary, that went full Far East and released a game of exotic beauty and charm with Chinese mythology in mind – Si Xiang. The game's official description reads: “In Chinese mythology the skies were divided by four mythological creatures that guarded the world and Iron Dog Studios Si Xiang’ unleashes these tremendous mythological beasts into a spectacular slot.”

This 5-reel game has all the visual cues inherent to Chinese architecture of old, particularly the sacred spots like temples and places of worship. The main game's backdrops are set in a thriving big city. Once the Extra Spins mode is triggered, that changes to a remote landscape with some cool-looking clouds in the shape of a dragon.

Its key features include the expanding symbols of The Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger and Wild Tortoise. A special Yin Yang symbol that sits outside of the reels, to the left, will release multiple features at specific points during the game. When Yin Yang lands on a winning combo, it will give out multipliers and can even unleash some of the wild beasts.

The game is playable on smartphones and tablet devices just as well as on desktop computers.

Here is the neat game preview:

John Hennigan Wins 2018 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Championship for Fifth Gold Bracelet

Casino News Daily
John Hennigan Wins 2018 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. Championship for Fifth Gold Bracelet

John Hennigan just won his fifth gold bracelet from the WSOP after four days of grueling poker action in this year’s $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. championship. The player was also awarded $414,692 for outlasting a pack of 166 entries who put to the test his skills in not just one but five different poker games.

A quiet and composed player, Hennigan remained true to himself in that tournament, as well. When asked how he felt after becoming just one of 25 players in WSOP’s history to have won five gold pieces, the player said that he was not too preoccupied with his accomplishment, although five indeed felt better than four.

As mentioned above, this year’s edition of the H.O.R.S.E. championship drew 166 entries who generated a prize pool of $1,560,400. The top 25 finishers got paid. Poker celebrities such as Daniel Negreanu, Chris Ferguson, Shaun Debb, and Jason Mercier, who won the tournament back in 2016, were among those to get busted before the money bubble burst on Day 2.

The event was planned to be played over three days, but the final two players – Hennigan and his heads-up opponent David Baker, decided that they would need a rest before completing their match, so play was extended into an additional fourth day. Both players went a long way before reaching that final stage of the game.

Iraj Parvizi Puts Up Terrific Show

UK-based player Iraj Parvizi entered the eight-handed final table as the chip leader. The player himself said jokingly several times throughout the final table that he was an amateur facing top pros. For a while, the player was dominating action, playing aggressively and putting great pressure on his opponents.

Hennigan recalled shortly after the event’s end that Parvizi proved to be a big trouble for almost everyone at the table, including for the eventual champion himself. Hennigan went on to say that it was actually only Baker who managed to keep his footing amid Parvizi’s attacks.

The UK player eventually exited in fourth place. Lee Salem left next. The player began three-handed play as the chip leader, but quickly lost his momentum and the last of his chips to the two remaining players.

Hennigan and Baker battled throughout the final level of the night, but could not determine the champion and eventually decided to call it a night and resume play on the next day. Baker was the short stack at that point. On the final day of action, the player managed to double several times to keep himself and his significantly smaller stack afloat, but a Limit Hold’em hand eventually saw him bust in second place for $256,297.

On the final hand in play, Baker went all in for his last 65,000 with [Ad][6s] to his opponent’s [Jc][3h]. The board ran out [10s][3s][2h][Qh][Qc] to put an end to the tournament.

Doesn’t time fly when we’re enjoying ourselves? Who would think that WinADay Casino is already celebrating its 10th birthday next week? Anyway, it’s been an incredible year for the venue, as it not only launched five new games and cryptocurrency support, but also witnessed a site-wide progressive jackpot in a record-breaking $277,482 chunk. To mark the beginning of another successful decade in business, the innovative betting site is ready to release an entirely new addition called Vegas Vibes, accompanied by birthday deals and a Freebie up to $100, both available until June 28th.

After introducing cryptocurrencies last July, Bitcoin users became more than welcome to join the venue, and both deposit and withdrawal options are now available. Earlier in February, the casino added Litecoin, only to beef up the platform with BCH a month later, in March. The number of players who prefer betting in cryptocurrencies due to lower fees and faster processing times has been multiply increased, says the casino manager.

The platform is constantly evolving to answer the latest industry trends since players’ preferences change over time, added Michael Hilary, who has managed the venue since 2008. However, the operator’s dedication to customer service has remained unchanged, as it represents one of the key elements in running a successful gambling business.

The site’s soon-to-be-launched Vegas Vibes slot will bring the thrills of Las Vegas, thanks to a bonus round that awards up to 15 free games with a 3X bet multiplier! The casino’s progressive jackpot is nearly $200,000 and rising, so hitting five Elvis symbols with a max bet could payout some life-changing amounts, comments Hilary.

Caesars’ Las Vegas Casino Resort Employees Approve New Contract

Casino News Daily
Caesars’ Las Vegas Casino Resort Employees Approve New Contract

Unionized workers at Caesars Entertainment Corp.’s Las Vegas Strip and downtown properties approved Thursday the terms of a new five-year contract, thus putting an end to months of negotiations that, in another case scenario, could have culminated in a citywide employees’ strike.

While no details have been released about the terms of the new contract, it has emerged that it includes wage increases and a special language that aims to protect staff members in case the property they work at is sold to another company. The contract also addresses sexual harassment in the wake of multiple misconduct at the workplace allegations against disgraced casino boss Steve Wynn.

Under the terms of the new agreement between workers and their employer, guest room attendants will be provided with wireless devices that will make it possible for them to inform security that they feel under threat in due time. Employees asked for improved security at their workplace after last October’s deadly shooting in which a lone gunman opened fire into a crowd of concert-goers from the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay to kill 59 people and injure nearly 500 others.

The new contract also includes language that protects Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals beneficiaries as well as immigrants that live and work in the United States temporarily under a special protective status. That particular measure was negotiated after US President Donald Trump announced that he would seek to annul the Obama administration-promoted DACA immigration policy.

Reactions to the New Contract Terms

Unionized workers at Caesars’ properties negotiated the new agreement for months. The matter escalated into a citywide vote in May that authorized the local UNITE HERE Culinary and Bartenders Unions to call a citywide strike, if the negotiating parties failed to iron out their differences by the end of May. A tentative agreement was eventually reached, which prevented the city’s largest citywide strike in decades from taking place and causing disturbances and even closures of properties.

The negotiations covered 50,000 union members employed at Las Vegas’ casino resorts, including 12,000 workers at Caesars’ properties. All 12,000 are now covered by the new contract after yesterday’s approval. They are employed at the major company’s Strip properties, including the flagship Caesars Palace, Bally’s, Harrah’s, Paris, Flamingo, Planet Hollywood, The Linq, and The Cromwell, as well as the off-Strip Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

Union members have reached a similar agreement with MGM Resorts International, another major operator of casino resorts across Las Vegas.

Commenting on their new contract, workers said yesterday that by far it was the best one they had ever reached in the union’s history, particularly given the fact that it addresses safety concerns in the wake of last October’s tragedy and the sexual misconduct allegations against Mr. Wynn.

The Velvet Blackjack

The Velvet Blackjack

I have a Canadian friend named Ace. He and I have a lot in common. We both love to gamble, we ride horses -- he grew up on a large cattle ranch in Canada -- and we appreciate beautiful women.

When we aren't playing poker, betting on the horses or shooting dice, we talk on a variety of subjects ranging from politics to the clever ways casinos in order to relieve people of their cash.

'They don't force you to give them your money,' Ace lamented. 'They make you want to do it.'

I asked him to explain himself.

'They hit you over the head with a velvet blackjack,' Ace said. 'It doesn't even hurt because it's made of velvet. Now I'm talking about beautiful cocktail girls in sexy outfits, free money for slot machine players, and special promotions that lure you into the poker rooms or blackjack tables. The casinos are offering special promotions, but they are just cleverly designed scams created to take your money.

'After they overpower you with the velvet blackjack, you wake up and wonder where all your cash went. Then you repeat your performance and give it another shot.' Ace shook his head. 'People never learn.'

Back in the 1800s when the West was overrun by prospectors searching for gold, gambling saloons sprung up everywhere. The games of chance varied widely from legitimate to crooked. Your chances of being cheated in a gambling saloon were about 50 percent.

While towns made an effort to maintain law and order, many gambling disputes erupted into violence. Some saloons even had signs posted directing gamblers to check their guns with the bartender or a security officer.

'What's really amazing to me,' said Ace, 'is the fact that so much money changes hands in a casino and yet the violence is kept at a minimum. I guess it's the velvet blackjack syndrome at work. People lose their bankroll and tap into their credit cards until they use up all their cash. Then they just shrug off their losses, go home, and when they accumulate more money they come back again for another session.

'Back in the Old West, the loser would probably have shot up the place and would have either ended up dead or in jail.'

I agreed with Ace's observations. Actually, I am very impressed with the way most gamblers conduct themselves, whether they are winning or losing. It helps, of course, for a casino to have good security personnel mingling with the gamblers and heading off trouble before it becomes violent.

During my many years as a gadabout journalist and gambler, I can count on one hand the incidents of violence I have witnessed in a casino setting. They were limited to fistfights and in one case a shooting at the Showboat Casino in Las Vegas. Nobody was injured -- the shooter was too inebriated from tequila to shoot straight -- and the person with the gun was quickly arrested.

Casinos have perfected the use of the velvet blackjack and I have to hand it to them. They know how to manage the show and how to keep the customers coming back for more. That velvet blackjack is a marvelous invention.

CrownBet Set to Become Sportingbet after Ownership Change and William Hill Australia Purchase

Casino News Daily
CrownBet Set to Become Sportingbet after Ownership Change and William Hill Australia Purchase

Australian betting operator CrownBet filed earlier this week a “Change of company name reservation” form with the nation’s Securities and Investments Commission to reserve the Sportingbet Pty Ltd name, local news outlet The Australian Financial Review reports.

The move comes shortly after speculations had emerged that the company had been planning to rebrand itself and had picked the Sportingbet name. Sportingbet, once a major Australian gambling operator, had actually been established by CrownBet’s current Chief Executive Matt Tripp and his family.

CrownBet was owned by Australian casino operator Crown Resorts up until recently. It became known in March that Canadian gambling giant The Stars Group would buy an 80% stake in the business. It was also announced at about the same time that CrownBet was selected as the preferred bidder for the acquisition of William Hill’s ailing Australian business.

The major British bookmaker announced in January that it was reviewing its local operations and that a sale was among the options considered regarding the future of William Hill Australia. The company entered the Australian betting market back in 2013 with the acquisition of the Sportingbet, Centrebet, and Tom Waterhouse brands for nearly £460 million. William Hill then scrapped the three brands for its global brand. However, the operator never managed to gain footing in the highly competitive Australian betting market.

New Betting Taxes and Expected Impact on Operators’ Profitability

CrownBet’s acquisition of William Hill Australia and The Stars Group’s acquisition of CrownBet will create Australia’s third largest online gambling operator. However, analysts believe that the upcoming implementation of a point of consumption tax in a number of Australian states and territories will have enormously negative consequences for the industry and its stakeholders.

New South Wales announced yesterday that it would introduce a 10% tax on betting revenue generated by operators from local customers. The regime will take effect on January 1, 2019. The announcement came just a few days after the government of Queensland rolled out a similar measure. A point of consumption tax will come into effect in that state on October 1, 2018, but operators will be taxed at 15% on their local revenues.

South Australia was the first state to introduce a point of consumption taxation system and the tax has already taken effect there. Victoria announced that it would tax companies on 8% of their revenues, while the Australian Capital Territory’s 15% point of consumption tax is slated to come into effect at the turn of the year.

According to research firm Macquarie Wealth Management, the new wave of taxes across the nation would cost betting operators nearly A$200 million, which would leave CrownBet, Ladbrokes, and bet365’s local businesses strapped for cash. Macquarie believes that CrownBet’s EBIT would fall from $57 million to A$1 million after the implementation of the new taxation regimes, while Ladbrokes and bet365 would generate EBIT loss of A$19 million and A$13 million, respectively.

Sports Betting In California By 2020?

Sports Betting In California By 2020?

The state of California could legalize sports betting in 2020 according to an initiative that was proposed on Monday, June 11th by a political consultant of Cali card clubs. Mr. Russell Lowery said that the citizens of the Golden State will have an opportunity to express their opinion on a November ballot in two years including online and out-of-state gambling services, as well as sports leagues. The gaming industry has shown interest in a ballot and after a formal request, Lowery contacted the state attorney general’s office to assemble a title and formulate a possible initiative.

According to Lowery, two major aspects in betting on sports need to be taken seriously – consumer protection and revenue. The state could generate additional income from legal activity and the public could feel safer in a regulated gambling environment. Thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to lift a federal ban on sports wagering, the state is entitled to propose a separate bill in the California Legislature. However, the talks have only just begun, and Lowery cannot reveal the identity of the gambling companies that have expressed interest in a ballot measure.

Meanwhile, republican gubernatorial candidate, John Cox, announced President Trump’s full support, as well as a campaign against Democrat, Gavin Newsom. The November general election is not going to be all about Trump, since he is viewed unfavorably in California. Still, Trump’s recent endorsement played a major role in Cox’s ability to consolidate the GOP vote and the candidate is now ready to redeem for the 2016 election, when he voted for Libertarian, Gary Johnson.

Newsom expressed his opinion on Monday night, while responding to Trump’s tweet, in which he congratulated Cox on his second-place finish. The Democrat has also asked the President to come to California and campaign for Cox as much as possible.

Brian Rast Wins Doyle Brunson’s Last Poker Tournament for Fourth WSOP Bracelet

Casino News Daily
Brian Rast Wins Doyle Brunson’s Last Poker Tournament for Fourth WSOP Bracelet

Brian Rast, a mixed games and high roller specialist, scooped a few hours ago his career’s fourth WSOP gold bracelet after surviving through a field of 95 entries, including some of poker’s heavyweights. The player won the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship for the gold piece and $259,670 in prize money.

While Rast’s accomplishment deserves quite some attention, it can be said that poker legend Doyle Brunson was the one to steal the show. The ten-time gold bracelet winner entered the event in the very last minute possible on Day 2 and announced that it would be his career’s last tournament. Everyone rooted for Brunson and hoped that he would end a career of great achievements in a spectacular manner and by adding an 11th gold piece from the series.

Brunson eventually busted in sixth place but certainly showed his younger colleagues one last time just how incredibly good he was at this game.

The final day of the event was played on Tuesday. It kicked off with 11 survivors, Rast and Brunson among them. The first three eliminations of the day occurred quite quickly, and it was actually Brunson’s son, Todd (himself a gold bracelet winner), to also fall in those early stages of Day 3 action. The remaining eight were relocated to a single table to play down to a champion.

As mentioned above, Brunson, to everyone’s disappointment, went out in sixth place to collect a final poker tournament payout of $43,963. From that point on, five-handed play lasted for an hour before a player left the field. It was Italy’s Dario Sammartino who busted Shawn Sheikhan in fifth place. That secured the Italian with a considerable chip lead. However, it seemed that Rast’s time had finally come as the player began to gain momentum and to accumulate chips.

Rast eliminated James Alexander in fourth place which gave him the chip lead. The eventual champion never relinquished his advantage from that point on.

Sammartino exited the tournament in third place after a clash against Rast. That made for the final heads-up match between the well-known poker pro and his final opponent, Mike Wattel, who himself boasted quite some experience on the felt and was vying for his third bracelet from the series.

The heads-up duel began with Rast holding a 4-1 chip lead. Despite the big disadvantage, Wattel put up a good fight for the better part of three hours before eventually surrendering to his opponent. The player was rewarded $160,489 for his runner-up finish.

Another Major Title for Rast

Rast does not identify himself as a tournament regular. However, he has quite a collection of tournament trophies for a non-regular. As mentioned above, Rast scooped his fourth WSOP gold bracelet by winning the $10,000 No-Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw Championship.

The player is also a two-time WSOP Poker Player’s Championship; he won his titles in 2011 and 2016. Back in 2011, Rast won another gold piece from the WSOP after besting the field of a $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hold’em tournament. Winning the inaugural Aria Super High Roller Bowl for $7.5 million in prize money was another important milestone in Rast’s career.

Besides that, the player has been playing cash games for years now. He prefers high-stakes mixed formats to standard No-Limit Hold’em, which means that he regularly clashes against some of the world’s top grinders.

Asked about how it felt to win another gold piece and to be part of Doyle Brunson’s last tournament, Rast said that it always felt special to win a gold bracelet and that he was happy he captured another one. The player went on to say that he has been playing a lot against Brunson over the past several years and that he was full of appreciation for the poker legend.

Getting to Know Northern Lights Gaming

There’s a new slots studio on the horizon! In little over a year, Northern Lights Gaming entered the online gambling space with its premier video slot, “Rocky’s Gold”, and now tops the list as one of the providers to watch in 2018. It took just one title to score strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as SG Interactive and Yggdrasil. After our chat with the CEO, Andy Goodale, we’re pleased to share what we’ve learned about the young company, its vision, the inspiration for the first slot game and more. Enjoy the read and please share your feedback in our comments section below.

Q: As a fairly new provider, talk to us about the company and its vision.

A: Absolutely, here at Northern Lights Gaming our vision is to create high-end video slots for the European markets, in particular having a specific edge in the UK market space. The company is small, just over a year old, with only 8 employees but with lots and lots of online and offline gambling experience from board level through to the developers and artists. Right from the very beginning we always said the internal mantra was to ‘accept no compromise’.

Q: We’ve read that the founding members have experience in the online gambling industry. Can you share a bit about their background?

A: To keep it relatively short- At board level, we have some founding members of the Jadestone platform that later sold to WMS in 2012. Our CTO, Peter Lundh, has over 30 years of experience in telecoms and gambling industry and was one of the main people behind the Odobo platform. The rest of the team, developers/artists/logic guys are all from the gambling industry with years of experience in each of the relative positions. Then there is me – Andy Goodale, CEO – fortunate enough to have worked in the industry for over 25 years. Always on the content side and that’s where my passion is. And to be honest that’s where all of our passions really lie – we want to make great content.

Q: Rocky’s Gold is the first and only game currently available. What was the inspiration behind it and what do you hope it communicates to players about Northern Lights Gaming?

A: Ok so this is something I’ve not mentioned externally before! The inspiration for games for me comes from so many areas. Anything you can think of can trigger an idea. In this case, it stems from a TV Program on the Discovery Channel called ‘Gold Rush’. For me, the program has lots of similarities to slots in the way it would make me feel. The program portrayed that anticipation the miners have of hitting a gold streak really effectively. There is always the prospect that you could hit the jackpot - it was, in essence, this energy and adrenaline that I wanted to capture in the game. So we now had a theme and surprisingly the mechanics sort of flowed pretty quickly after this. The main decision we had to make was to not go out and reinvent the wheel on the first game. The temptation to do a completely new different type of game for your first development is huge but has lots of pitfalls.  We talked internally and decided that we would do a game that’s got proven mechanics, that works in the main market we are focusing on but also had a slight twist just to give it that edge. Bring that together with great logic and a no compromise view of the artwork and sound and that’s where we are now, hopefully just weeks away from going live.

Q: How have your deals with SG Interactive and Yggdrasil helped launch your brand of gaming? Are there more partnerships in the works? Also, were there existing connections within the business which helped to secure those contracts?

A: Having the connections helped. I’m truly thankful to everyone we have talked to over the past year about what we are doing and even more so to the platform guys and customers who we have done deals with. We have been very lucky to be able to call people up and have honest open conversations about our plans and in some cases preview some of the game ideas so yes contacts are good. In both the scenarios above with SG Digital and Yggdrasil we were initially able to talk to these guys because of the contacts we have had previously. But that only gets you so far, the content has to be right as well! Both these platforms, I hope, will be amazing for the Northern Lights content. To have them on board from the beginning is a huge plus for us. For the moment our focus is on the delivery of games on both these platforms. But we will continuously evaluate further distribution opportunities.

Q: One title down and many more to come. Can you share any details regarding upcoming slot releases?

A: Not really! – There is a definite evolution of our games and features coming out towards the end of the year. Just keep your eyes focused on our website we will be updating this continuously.

Q: Speaking of game releases, will you expand your portfolio beyond slot games?

A: There is no plan to but if I say categorically no then I’m sure that will come back to haunt me. But our current focus is creating great slots that everyone will play.

Q: How do you intend to remain competitive in this market?

A: One of the hardest things is to make sure we are competitive. We play a lot. We talk to great people in the industry – friends and colleagues – to get inspiration and to toss ideas around. We look at mechanics developing in other game genres. As a small company one of the main benefits are that we can push boundaries, and to stay courageous. Expect us to change – but again with the mantra “no compromise” in mind all the time. We try to always have a number of games that are in front of our development pipeline- that way we can play, tweak, enhance or scrap way before we start development. It also means we can show customers upfront what we are thinking about whilst giving us huge flexibility in changing parts of the game that we fell may not be working.

Q: We certainly can’t wait to see more from you guys. What have you got up your sleeve for the rest of the year?

A: We are due to release 3-4 games this year. Obviously, I can’t talk about those games but I can say that they are very different from each other, all investigating ideas and these that we think are worth exploring. And we have some amazing concepts for next year like I said earlier keep a close eye on our website.

Hong Kong Police Pledges to Investigate Digital Illegal Betting during World Cup 2018

Hong Kong Police Pledges to Investigate Digital Illegal Betting during World Cup 2018

Hong Kong authorities have revealed that local police would remain focused on carrying out operations against digital illegal betting at the time of the World Cup 2018, as the number of bookmakers which choose to go online to avoid being affected by certain regulatory requirements has surged over the past few years.

This basically means that law enforcement and regulatory authorities in Asia plan to even impose stricter measures on illegal sports betting in the region during one of the key sporting events in 2018, which is to be held from June 14th to July 15th.

The last few months have seen Chinese authorities keeping a close eye on illegal online gambling operations. Now, with the World Cup 2018 being just around the corner, a crackdown on dining and entertainment areas in the region is expected to become even stricter, with police raids going online, too.

As revealed by Raymond Chau Man-hin, who works as Senior Inspector at the Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, the Hong Kong police would initiate data gathering and special cyber patrols due to the fact that more gambling companies with offshore servers and betting websites are getting more engaged in providing local customers with illegal gambling services.

The Bureau’s Senior Superintendent Louis Chan Hon-ming revealed that he would lead a special working group, which would include representatives from the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau as well as the Criminal Intelligence Bureau. The group would be engaged in planning the Bureau’s tactics against illegal betting websites.

Digital Gambling Crimes More Difficult to Investigate

As CasinoNewsDaily reported yesterday, local players have started placing more bets by using instant message applications on their mobile devices in order to remain untraceable.

The South China Morning Post reported that according to Senior Inspector Raymond Chau Man-hin, a lot of bets are being placed by making calls on WhatsApp or even sending a voice message on such applications. He further shared that punters also prefer using mobile messenger applications due to the latter’s option to delete messages, which makes investigations more difficult, because no visible traces are left. Normally, cybercrime investigations are more complicated and take more time, as experts need to dig deeper to find enough evidence online.

At the time of the 2014 edition of the World Cup, the region set a betting record estimated to more than $95.6 million. More than 140 sites across the city of Hong Kong were searched by local police, with almost 100 raids being reported as successful. In addition, almost 180 individuals aged from 20 to 65 were arrested by police officers for allegedly taking part in illegal sports betting, operating as bookmakers, as well as in money laundering. Experts have projected that the World Cup 2018 would see similar, if not larger, volumes of sports-betting related crime.

Under the current legislation in Hong Kong, anyone who offers bookmaking services out of law could suffer a monetary penalty amounting to approximately $640,000 and could be jailed for seven years. On the other hand, punters who bet with bookmakers could face a monetary penalty amounting to about $3,830 and could be jailed for a period of nine months.
